Photographers
in Minneapolis are frequently asked to shoot for comp
cards--sometimes called a composite. Comp cards are
best used as a “leave behind,” when a
model makes a call on a potential client, as something
considerably more than a business card is needed.
Typically,
comp cards produced by photographers in the Minneapolis
area measures 8 1/2” X 5 1/2”. On one
side there will be, perhaps one large, very strong
photograph of the model, perhaps with the models name
imprinted on it. It may be a head shot, but it need
not be. But it
must be strong. On the reverse side of the card, there
will be three, four, or five smaller shots, perhaps
depicting the model in a business suit, another in
evening dress, another in a swimming suit, and so
on. All of this photography must be very strong, and
very well done.
It
is important to consult with the photographer at least
several days before the shoot. Decisions must be made:
how many shots total on the comp card? What wardrobe
does the model have available for the various “looks?
Will everything be shot in the studio, or will locations
be
involved? What locations? Will a make-up and hairstylist
be needed? Who will that be? All of this should be
discussed and decided before the shoot.
There
are some photographers in the Minneapolis area who
will produce the comp card: design it, have it printed,
delivered, and so on. This may be the best way to
do it, as the photographer is most concerned about
the quality of his work, often even more concerned
than the model. Another good way to proceed after
the shoot, is to go to a graphic designer, and have
them produce it. Both of these ways are better than
finding a company over the internet which has number
of “stock,” ready made templates, into
which to place the photos, and then mail the printed
comp cards to you. This may be the cheapest way, but
it is also the poorest way.
